The larynx, commonly known as the “voice box,” is a structure located in the neck that plays a critical role in speech and breathing. It is made up of several cartilage structures, muscles, and ligaments that are responsible for producing sound by manipulating the flow of air through the vocal cords. The larynx also helps to protect the airway during swallowing by closing the epiglottis, a flap of tissue that covers the opening to the trachea (windpipe). Additionally, the larynx plays a role in regulating the flow of air in and out of the lungs, making it an important component of the respiratory system.
